Schedule of BOOST Nation: Town Hall meetings at the 2011 BOOST Conference
Thursday, April 28
10:00am-12:00pm The State of After School in the Nation
Jodi Grant, Executive Director, Afterschool Alliance
Washington, DC

On April 28th, from 10 to 12, Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant will lead a Town Hall discussion on the state of afterschool in the nation. Every afternoon 15 million children are unsupervised after school ends, while the parents of 18 million young report that their children would participate in afterschool programs if they were available and accessible. The recent economic downturn and budget climate at the federal, state and local levels threaten to increase the number of children without afterschool program opportunities at a time when the well-documented academic and crime-prevention benefits of afterschool programs are more important than ever. The time has never been more critical to step up advocacy and awareness efforts on behalf of the children and families that benefit from and need afterschool programs. And we have an amazing story to tell: over 8 million students now participate in afterschool programs; new trends in STEM, physical education, ELL and an emphasis on engaged learning are resulting in a new generation of participants, programs and staff; older youth are now getting academic credit for work performed through afterschool programs; and closer alignment with school curriculum is resulting in improved academic outcomes for those in afterschool programs. Share your story and help us reinvigorate a dynamic movement towards quality afterschool programs for all. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet Jodi Grant, ask questions and get up-to-the-minute answers about the state of after school programs and 21st CCLC funding.
